Cliff,

On my TC29D the lever just slides forward, no intent or click. From time to time if I am moving, I will feel the gear engage, but that is it.

I have a TC29D with the New Holland loader. I've put 360 hours on it and have been very satisfied. All 3 tractors you are looking at are good. Drive each one and pick the one that seems to be the best fit for you, and from the dealer you are most comfortable with.

Glenmac, We used to use those tires (in a slightly smaller diameter) on our Jeeps in the sand dunes along Lake Michigan. We called them "Tera Tires".
My TC29D has turfs & they work very well for me and so far have been good even in Michigan winters. I have not found a need for chains.

Danny, I would check with the dealer. 3/8 of an inch does not sound like much. Having said that, my 250 hr. TC29D PTO shift lever stays where I put it.

John, Deere actually makes a very good one. You could probably go back to your dealer & get the measurments from them. After I got my TC 29D I went to the Deere dealer & bought one, as NH does (or did not then) make one and I was not interested in making one. It holds +- 600 Lbs of concrete & does the job. Someday I'll get around to painting it blue.

You're right Roger. Last winter never got cold and snowy enough at the same time for starting to be an issue. However, this winter is a different story in Michigan. I will probably have them installed when I send it to the dealer for it's 200 hr checkup/service about 20 hours from now.

I paid about the same as Larry in Michigan for my TC29D a year ago August. I've been moving snow (lots) here in SE Michigan and have been able to do just fine with my turfs & no chains. Never have had a traction problem, steering is a little problematical only if I have to much down pressure on the FEL.

I would consider a 72" finish mower rather than a 60". The TC29 handles it just fine & mowing goes quicker. I use a Landpride Model 1572 (72") rear discharge on my 5 (hilly) acres. I found out from Landpride I can get mulching blades for it. I plan to order those soon.

That's a great point Roger. I think the burden actually falls on both, but the majority of it falls on the "expert" or the dealer in this case. Having spent my business life as the person recommending (20 years selling sailboat sales & the last 10 as a software consultant) I always felt it was my responsibility to recommend what was proper. However as you stated, if the dealer actually did believe in it, well, that is a different story. We as consumers also need to do our homework as Rod did by posting his question.

Richard, I paid $1,650. for my model 1572 rear discharge Land Pride about a year ago. I've been very happy with it. You are getting a good price. I'm using mine on a TC29D & mowing 5 acres. I found out last fall that a mulching kit or mulching blades are available for it & I plan to get them. If I remember right, the main difference between the series numbers was horsepower requirements. My TC29 has no problem with the 1572, even in the tall wet stuff.

RE: eye bolts in the floor.

The guy we bought from (he built the pole barn) was a car nut & had 4 "V" shaped plates in the floor (I think they are standard for auto body shops) that he used for frame straightening. If the idea is for straightening things, it is better/stronger than eye bolts and is flush with the floor.

Michigander - I have a TC29D that I got a year ago last August (165 hours now).

RE your wife and the pending tractor purchase: I discovered it was a lot easier to beg for forgivness than to get permission!

Now that we have had it for a year, she is glad I (we) got it.

Jeff, When & for how long does it smoke? In "cooler" temps my TC29D smokes at startup for a few seconds. As it warms up the smoke goes away & at operating temps it never smokes. I would consider this normal for most diesels & have observed it on everything from 3 cyl boat and tractor engines all the way to a 12V72 Detroit Diesel. I am not a mechanic, it is just what I have observed. I agree w/Bradley & would not mess with the "smoke screw".

Curt, I have a TC29D with a FEL and 6' Landpride finish mower. I got it a year ago August, now have 150 hours on it & have had no problems at all. I did not get the Super Steer, but probably should have. I spent 3 years looking and comparing & I've been happy with my choice.
I live in the South Lyon/Brighton MI area & got it from Lloyd Miller & Sons in Fowlerville. I do not know if I got the best price, but I got a fair price. For me, the dealer was more important than the price. They have been very good on service.

An old farmer once told me that it was so you could back out of real soft stuff with the extra traction if you started to get stuck in a field. This was in the days before 4WD was common. It is probably less of an issue with the advent of 4 wheel drive.

Same thing happened to my TC29D. I tried the time tested WD 40 (fixes anything!) but it seemed not to work. Lo and behold about a month later the WD40 worked into the piston & freed it.

I still had the dealer fix it under warranty. It was not difficult to replace, but you had to pull the steering column to get at it. That was a little more complicated than I wanted to get in to, so I called the dealer to come & get it. It worked out that at the same time he did all of the 100 hour stuff.

Works fine & I now shoot a little WD 40 into the piston from time to time to keep it lubricated.

My TC29D dash also foggs up. It only seemed to be a problem when I hit it with a direct stream of water from the hose. I now avoid the dash & things are better.
